Alabama Alliance for Arts Education, Inc. (AAAE)

Amount Awarded: $12,500
The Alabama Alliance for Arts Education will host Making It Happen, its third statewide Arts Education Summit within the past three years, focusing on supporting excellence in arts education as a statewide movement. This October, the AAAE will focus on Making It Happen by supporting stakeholders in their efforts to implement quality arts education. Some sessions are designed to enhance arts instruction, arts integration, inquiry-based learning, and reflective questioning. Other sessions will support community collaborations through the launch of model programs, an introduction to the “Kennedy Center Community Audit,” a showcase for the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Creative Campus programs, teaching artist showcases, and school poster presentations. Finally, an advocacy day will be planned by the newly formed Alabama Arts Education Leadership Team.

Alaska Arts Education Consortium, Inc. (AAEC)

Amount Awarded: $11,000
The Alaska Arts Education Consortium’s Growing Arts Education Leaders for Alaska, The Snowball Phase, will build on two prior years of planning and a highly successful retreat for statewide administrators to provide a series of trainings that strengthen and broaden the emerging Arts Education School Leader Cadre. The project will monitor and support the Cadre’s short and long range plans to increase arts education in their respective districts and schools. They will achieve this using online communication, conference sectionals, and a winter Arts Retreat in Juneau during the legislative session. The Cadre will learn and apply information and strategies to increase access and quality of arts education, and become stronger advocates in order to positively impact the direction of arts education and school improvement in Alaska.


California Alliance for Arts Education (CAAE)

Amount Awarded: $12,500
The California Alliance for Arts Education’s project, Local Advocacy Network, hopes to preserve and expand arts education in schools through a strong system of advocacy coalitions, and to create an infrastructure for replicating local coalitions in a statewide network. This will be accomplished through five major activities: 1) Recruit, support and sustain 10 new and 10 existing Local Advocacy Network (LAN) coalitions; 2) Establish a coalition/network leadership development program; 3) Create a best practices manual to guide LAN coalition building; 4) Establish an effective communications system between and among LAN coalitions and the Alliance; and 5) Develop a rapid response mechanism to assist communities experiencing school budget crises. The CAAE will use the Kennedy Center funds to educate local communities on the value and benefits of the arts for every child at a community event in 10 localities throughout California.


Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE)

Amount Awarded: $25,000
The Florida Alliance for Arts Education’s Learning through Arts & Technology will address the persistent disconnect between career and technology education and the arts within Florida’s K-12 curriculum. From these units, sample guidelines of how to integrate curriculum will be created. Curriculum specialists from K-12 settings will work with leaders from the digital media industry and higher education to explore authentic subject matter connections. Professional development will prepare participating teachers to design and implement units of study that integrate benchmarks and standards from art and technical disciplines. Additionally, Florida’s foremost arts integration specialists will coach teachers in the development and implementation of these units of study. Evaluators will observe and document the teaching and learning process at three pilot sites, and final products from participating classes will be shared at a Digital Media Festival in spring 2011. Examples of curricula and student work will be posted on the Florida Alliance for Arts Education website to inform and inspire others. Lastly, professional development opportunities for teachers, artists, and interested others will be conducted as a part of the FAAE Arts Integration Symposia Series in 2011-2012 as a follow-up to sustain this work.


Hawai’i Alliance for Arts Education/Hawai’i Arts Alliance

Amount Awarded: $25,000
The Hawai’i Alliance for Arts Education will host the ARTS FIRST Institute 2011, at which elementary school teachers learn how to use and implement the “Essential Arts Toolkit: Hawai’i Fine Arts Grade Level guide for the K-5 Classroom Teacher,” to deliver standards-based arts content in the classroom. Learning from master artist educators, teachers will experience the arts as students, as well as reflect on how they will teach and use the arts strategies in the classroom. Each of the four days will include a morning plenary session with national arts specialist Deborah Brzoska, studio thinking sessions on responding to arts exemplars, and afternoon studio sessions. Participants in the Institute will select a focus in Drama/Music for Grades K-2, or either Dance or Visual Arts for Grades 3-5.


Iowa Alliance for Arts Education

Amount Awarded: $12,600
The Iowa Alliance for Arts Education’s BASICS program is an initiative to select, train, develop, and promote schools in three locations across the state. The goals of the program include analyzing and improving their arts education programs with the help of the “Kennedy Center Community Audit,” creating community/business partners to support these programs using the “Kennedy Center Arts Education Alliance Network Advocacy Tool Kit,” and implementing a process to construct an Arts Education Strategic Plan. Training will be given to a development team of stakeholders formed by the schools, which will include an administrator, a school board member, a business partner, a community supporter, and four of their teachers in dance, theater, music, and visual arts. In addition, four state arts teacher leaders representing each arts discipline will assist the Iowa Alliance for the Arts Education Project Leaders in the training, including presenting a unit from the Iowa Core Curriculum. On the local level, a larger task force, including the initial development team, will create and implement their strategic plan and action steps to build community/partnerships and improve the quality and support of their arts education analysis, improvement, and advocacy process, including an on-site visit and input by the two project leaders.


Maine Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE)

Amount Awarded: $25,000
The Maine Alliance for Arts Education will expand and develop its Imagination Intensive Communities model to identify, recognize, study, and share information on communities that provide an array of opportunities for the creative development of their students. These communities use the resources they have, as well as their community values, to ensure that young people learn to create and innovate beginning in elementary school, and continuing throughout the transition to college and future careers. Using an application and site-visit process that fosters deep engagement within communities, as well as professional development, web profiles, and Kennedy Center resources, MAAE and its partners (Maine Department of Education and Maine Arts Commission) will have an impact on the exemplary communities named Imagination Intensive Communities, as well as on communities searching for models and strategies to improve arts education offerings for their students.

Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance, Inc. (AEMS)

Amount Awarded: $25,000
The Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance, in collaboration with the Maryland chapter of Young Audiences/Arts for Learning and the Maryland State Arts Council, will implement a fourth year of the Teaching Artist Institute (TAI). The mission of TAI is to ensure that teaching artists deliver high quality arts experiences that are standards-based and enhance learning in the arts and other areas. The TAI will continue to offer a professional development program for 20 teaching artists and classroom teachers entitled “Bringing Your Art into the Classroom,” specifically for teaching artists interested in working alongside classroom teachers in Maryland public schools. The training program consists of a three-day retreat that provides an Introduction to the Fine Arts State Curriculum, Lesson Plan Design, Assessment Strategies, Classroom Management Strategies, Making Authentic Connections Between an Art Form, and the State Curriculum and 21st Century Skills. The TAI will follow participants as they refine their lesson plans, pilot their classroom residencies, and provide a forum to share their experiences at the AEMS annual Cultural Arts for Education conference and at the Maryland Artist/Teacher Institute (MATI). In addition to this in-depth training program, TAI will offer quarterly follow-up, day-long training opportunities to the more than 50 artists who have participated in TAI and have expressed an interest in continued training, convening, and networking opportunities.

Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE)

Amount Awarded: $12,500
The Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education’s Arts Integration Academy: Opening Paths to Understanding will weave a tapestry of what schools teach (standards in the arts and other subject areas), with how schools teach (best pedagogical practices based on the brain research). The Academy will incorporate teaching artist residency, professional development exploration, collaboration, and coaching to expand understanding of 21st century teacher and learner characteristics and needs in six selected schools, one in each geographic area of Mississippi. The Academy will provide a journey year for six whole school staffs and students with opportunities to build skills, understanding, and appreciation of arts integration as an approach to teaching and learning.

Missouri Alliance for Arts Education

Amount Awarded: $19,500
The Missouri Alliance for Arts Education, in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Partners in Education Missouri teams, will present professional development seminars for beginning and experienced teachers in Missouri schools and teaching artists. The seminars will enable teachers to implement strategies to enliven, motivate, and educate Missouri students through the arts and will provide assistance to teaching artists in developing arts-based study guides. Regional seminars will pair teachers with less than four years experience with teacher mentors in Kansas City, St. Louise, Cape Girardeau, and Joplin areas to receive training on how to implement arts-centered learning to strengthen their existing arts programs or integrate the arts in their classes. The regional presentations will provide the opportunity for teachers to design lessons using “big ideas” and the principles of Understanding by Design®. Teaching artists will create materials that will connect a residency or touring performance to school curricula. Dr. Karl Schaeffer will present two sessions at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Interface Conference, a statewide gathering of grades K-6 teachers from all areas of the state. The sessions will focus on dance strategies to enhance math and science instruction.


New York State Alliance for Arts Education (NYSAAE)

Amount Awarded: $12,500
The New York State Alliance for Arts Education will, using the “Kennedy Center Community Audit/Resource Assessment” tools, conduct three community/school audits, one urban, one suburban, and one rural, with the resulting audit report serving as a basis for discussion on the expanded usage of the arts and community cultural resources as a central part of the school’s strategic improvement plan. This project will serve as a pilot for providing audit and planning services to other districts across New York State.

North Dakota Arts Alliance

Amount Awarded: $5,000
The North Dakota Arts Alliance and its partners will complete four community arts audits, covering an urban community, a rural community, a tribal community, and a multi-county consolidated school. The audit will assess the status of arts education, the community knowledge of the need for arts education, and a community plan for increasing arts education access for students. The instrument will also include basic information and an assessment of knowledge of the impact of the arts in economic development and quality of life in the community.


Ohio Alliance for Arts Education (OAAE)

Amount Awarded: $25,000
The Arts Education High Quality Professional Development (HQPD) Phase II project will provide five regional one-day sessions in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Hilliard, and Wooster for arts educators and teaching artists. Regional workshops will be hosted in cooperation with the Kennedy Center Partners in Education Teams and two of Ohio’s professional arts education organizations, Ohio Music Education Association and Ohio Art Education Association. Professional development workshops in the areas of assessment, integration, and standards will be provided at each one-day session. Each session will include two tracks, basic and advanced, and will be taught by arts education professionals with experience in the field of education, the arts, and working with adult learners. The aim of the project is to increase the capacity and practices of teachers to provide instruction in and through the arts to their students.


Rhode Island Alliance for Arts Education (RIAAE)

Amount Awarded: $8,200
The Rhode Island Alliance for Arts Education will support the expansion of the RI Arts Passport Program, an on-line provider of statewide community arts offerings, including free events, workshops, and performance tickets for interdisciplinary learning, to a full-blown, on-line learning center. RIAAE will do this by engaging a teacher-design team of our outstanding teacher leaders and their students in creating easily used curriculum and assessment resources based on community “school” learning.


South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education (SCAAE)

Amount Awarded: $25,000
The South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education will partner with the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project (ABC) to develop a statewide network of principals of schools that have positioned the arts at the center of their educational programs. Building on the ABC Steering Committee needs assessment and preliminary survey of ABC principals, and responding to this group’s request for more frequent, structured interaction, this SC Arts Principals Network will begin by meeting four times a year. Three will take place online through web conferencing and one will take place as a two-day Institute organized by SCAAE, ABS and the South Carolina State Department of Education (SCDE). Already identified and prioritized by a task force, initial topics to be addressed include: scheduling, budgeting, staffing, professional development, transfer of power, and buy-in. All of these issues are connected to the long-term sustainability of arts-focused schools. Through this network, existing resources and strategies will be shared, new support materials developed, and lines of communications opened to build and sustain momentum through frequent communication and peer-to-peer mentoring. During the school year, partners will solicit feedback from participating principals and work to ensure the effectiveness of all interactions. After completing this pilot year, partners will measure the impact of the network and its resources on administrative practice, revise as needed, and continue into the future with funding support for the Institute from the SCDE.


ArtsEd Washington/Washington Alliance for Arts Education (WAAE)

Amount Awarded: $25,000
ArtsEd Washington will implement and test several capacity-building enhancements designed to strengthen the core assets of its Principals’ Arts Leadership (PAL) program. These enhancements, the development of which has been guided by the results of a 2008 Kennedy Center-funded comprehensive evaluation, will focus on strengthening the Year 1 Planning phase of our three year PAL program and will include the addition of new Tools (an Application Survey and a comprehensive School Arts Inventory Survey) and Activities (three facilitated, school-based Focused Conversations and one large group PAL Whole Program Workshop) to benefit the 10 elementary schools that will enter the PAL program in Fall 2010.

Appalachian Education Initiative Foundation

Amount Awarded: $25,000
The Appalachian Education Initiative, in partnership with the Arts Section of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, will provide professional development opportunities and on-going support for teaching artists throughout the state. This phase of the project will bring two Kennedy Center “Artist as Educators” Seminars, Laying a Foundation: Defining Arts Integration and Mapping the Journey: Planning Effective Residencies for Students, to West Virginia in fall 2010 and spring 2011. These seminars will provide the groundwork for a stronger teaching artists program and communications network in West Virginia.
