The 2003 VSA Playwright Discovery Teacher Award Recipient

Grace A. Warren

Grace A Warren, 2003 recipient of the VSA arts Playright Discovery Teacher award

For over 30 years, Grace A. Warren has taught secondary students English, journalism and reading in both California and Florida. For the last four years she has taught at Spanish River High School in Palm Beach County, Florida. She earned a B.A. in English from University of California at Berkeley and an M.A. in English from California State University Northridge. In 1989, she received a research grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study the art and literature created by Japanese-Americans interned in relocation centers during World War II. After attending VSA arts of Florida-sponsored playwriting workshops at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Ms. Warren began to use playwriting in her classroom as a way to explore the theme of disability. Through playwriting, she said, her students "became the creators of their own education, learned the value that diversity brings to our lives, and produced some award-winning plays along the way."
